# Small charity lottery, big possibilities: Affinity Lottery turns five

Published by [Gemma Ward](https://info.woodsvalldata.co.uk/blog/author/gemma-ward) on Nov 5, 2026, 12:00:01 PM

## Key takeaways

- Affinity Lottery celebrates five years of helping charities build unrestricted regular giving income.
- A pooled draw makes a small charity lottery accessible without funding a standalone prize pot.
- Your charity keeps its identity and supporter relationships, with operational support from Woods Valldata.
- Real charity experiences show how manageable beginnings can create opportunities for growth.

# Affinity, the perfect choice for small charity lottery, is 5!

Five years ago, a Friday draw marked the start of something special. On 5 November 2021, players supporting King’s College Hospital Charity and Hft took part in the first Affinity Lottery draw. Both charities remain part of the Affinity family today.

On 5 November 2026, we’re celebrating that beginning and everything it has made possible. With over three million pounds raised so far and eighteen thousand players, Affinity has grown from two pioneering charities into a community sharing a simple ambition: making regular giving easier for supporters to give and easier for fundraisers to manage.

For anyone considering a small charity lottery, this birthday is a reminder that you don’t need to begin big to build something meaningful.

## Why a small charity lottery can make a difference

Unrestricted income gives charities room to respond where the need is greatest. Regular income also helps teams plan beyond the next appeal or event. A weekly lottery brings these ambitions together, offering supporters a recurring way to help, alongside the chance to win.

The [Fundraising Regulator explains](https://www.fundraisingregulator.org.uk/about-fundraising/topics/lotteries-and-raffles) that a prize incentive can engage people who might not otherwise donate. That makes lottery worth exploring both as an introduction for new supporters and as another option for people who already care about your cause.

It isn’t a replacement for every other fundraising product. Think of it as another invitation: a different reason to start a relationship, with opportunities to deepen that connection over time.

## Sharing the draw, keeping the relationship

Affinity is a pooled weekly lottery. Players supporting different charities enter a shared draw, while each charity retains its own brand and its own player relationships. Sharing the platform doesn’t mean losing the personal connection that makes charitable giving special.

Through a charity-branded website, supporters can sign up, choose their numbers and arrange payments. Woods Valldata manages payment processing, player administration, draw management and prize payouts, leaving fundraisers more time for recruitment and supporter care.

The [Affinity prize structure](https://www.woodsvalldata.co.uk/affinity-lottery/) includes an insured top prize of £25,000, an insured £1,000 second prize and £300 in guaranteed runner-up prizes each week. The insured top prize is a chance to win, not a guaranteed weekly payout. But the £300 prize pot means that there's winners every week. What's more if that charities don’t have to build a standalone prize fund before getting started - it's all covered as part of the platform.

A small setup fee and charges linked to chances played help make testing weekly lottery for your supporters manageable. However, recruitment still requires some team time and potentially budget, so low cost should never be confused with no cost or guaranteed returns. That said, you'll only ever pay per chance for using Affinity Lottery. There's no hidden extras.

To celebrate our 5th Birthday, why not help us share the lottery love by forwarding this blog on to a professional friend who might be looking at new ways to raise individual giving income.

## Three stories worth celebrating

## Hospice at Home West Cumbria: confidence to grow

For [Hospice at Home West Cumbria](https://www.woodsvalldata.co.uk/case-studies/hospice-at-home-west-cumbria/), lottery already fitted its fundraising strategy, but its platform was holding it back. Moving 120 existing players to Affinity gave the team information in one place and a clearer foundation for growth. In addition they achieved 40% growth through organic channels in the first four months.

## The Charity for Civil Servants: a new recruitment route

When face-to-face fundraising stopped during the pandemic, [the Charity for Civil Servants](https://www.woodsvalldata.co.uk/case-studies/the-charity-for-civil-servants/) needed another way to recruit regular supporters. It launched Affinity in December 2021. A highlight for their lottery was signing-up 628 new players during a two-week promotional moment in its second year: an example of a focused campaign bringing a familiar proposition to a receptive audience.

## St Vincent de Paul Society: space to test

[St Vincent de Paul Society](https://www.woodsvalldata.co.uk/case-studies/st-vincent-de-paul-society-affinity-lottery/) wanted a remotely managed fundraising option that wouldn’t overwhelm its small individual giving team. Affinity enabled a launch without significant upfront investment. The charity recruited 150 players within six months, using social media, its website, member emails and QR-code leaflets.

## The next chapter starts with supporters

Five years of Affinity is really five years of people choosing to help: the first charities willing to try something new, fundraisers sharing lessons, and supporters making their chosen cause part a fun way to win something in return.

And keeping those player relationships strong matters as much as attracting the next player. Successful charity lotteries welcome people warmly, explain what their support makes possible and keep communications relevant. Your players remain your supporters; Affinity gives you the platform to manage their support. Your stewardship keeps them supporting.

It's worth noting that the [Chartered Institute of Fundraising](https://ciof.org.uk/library/types-of-fundraising/a-guide-to-lotteries-and-raffles-for-charities/) says that lottery participation can lead to support in other ways. The opportunity is to nurture that connection thoughtfully and build your relationship over tim..

As Affinity turns five, we'd like to take this opportunity to say thank you to every charity and supporter who has helped shape the journey. Here’s to more possibilities, more shared learning and more sustainable support for good causes.

## Small Charity Lottery: Frequently asked questions

### What is a small charity lottery?

It is a lottery used by a smaller charity to raise funds while offering prizes. The phrase describes the audience here; it should not be confused with the legal category “small society lottery”.

### How does Affinity Lottery work?

Affinity pools players from participating charities into a shared weekly draw. Each charity has its own branded website and supporter relationships, while Woods Valldata handles the operational administration.

### Can we launch with a small supporter base?

Yes. Affinity has no minimum player requirement. You can get going with just one player... but we recommend you start with a realistic recruitment plan, test your existing channels and assess whether the product suits your audience and resources.

### What does Affinity Lottery cost?

There is a small setup fee, followed by charges for chances played rather than ongoing fixed platform fees. [Ask Gemma for current terms](https://meetings-eu1.hubspot.com/gemma-ward1) and include recruitment costs in your forecast.

### Do we keep our player relationships?

Yes. Your charity retains its own player data and relationships, enabling ongoing stewardship.

### Does a pooled lottery remove compliance responsibilities?

No. Lotteries are regulated gambling. Specialist support reduces the operational burden, but charities must understand their responsibilities, licensing or registration requirements, transparent communications and safeguards for people in vulnerable circumstances.
